Oscar Scherer SP (Dec 23 - 28)

We are celebrating Christmas here with Joan's brother Skip and his wife Shirley. We will be joined on Christmas day by cousins Dave and wife Marty, and Pam. We plan to get in some kayaking and fishing and a lot of eating. We are hoping the weather holds up for us.
Christmas Eve - We and Skip took our kayaks out in the channel here and headed out towards the Gulf. We fished and paddled for about three hours, but Skip was the only one who caught anything. He landed a nice, but too small to keep, redfish. J & J saw a little action and heard some promising reports, but came back empty. The weather, although windy, was great.
Christmas Day - Merry Christmas. The day started quite cool, with lows in the forties, but warmed up quickly. Preparations soon began for afternoon dinner.
The steak, chicken, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, zucchini bread, peas/carrots, and peach cobbler w/vanilla ice cream were wonderful, only exceeded by the great company. The weather also cooperated, but deteriorated overnight.

Withlacoochee River Kayaking (Dec 3)

The following was an email send by Faye & Ray
------------------------------------------
"

The 9-mile paddle on the Withlacoochee turned out to be a very interesting trip - Ray had found some info regarding this area - we had a map of the river - we also had info from a kayak rental place - indicating that it was a 3+ hour paddle - so we decided since we were all experience paddlers we could do that without any problem - there were 5 hardy paddlers - John & Joan came up - our friend John R and the 2 of us - it was cold in the morning but warmed up nicely when we hit the water - we did a shuddle - since we were going to have lunch at a restaurant by the US 41 bridge. - We left at 10:50 - the river is beautiful - there was not much traffic - we paddled and paddled - finally saw a boat - how much longer to the bridge - oh about 5 miles - well we had already gone 5+ miles - Ray had a very important homeowners meeting at 4:00 (no problem getting to that) John & Joan had plans early in the evening - (no problem) - 2:30 we were still on the river and not sure just how much longer we had to go. FINALLY, we arrived at the restaurant (take out place) at 3:45 - John & Joan were going to miss their dinner engagements and Ray was going to be late for his meeting. We found out later that the 9 mile trip was a 15 mile trip - BUT it was beautiful!!!

Oh, yeah, on the drive home we found out that Ray's Homeowner's meeting had been cancelled.

Oscar Scherer SP (Nov 27 - 28)

We need no have a few items looked at under warranty at RV World, that is only a few minutes away from Oscar Scherer, so we decided to make a short camping trip out of it. It was rather late when we got here so there was only time to take a walk around the campground and have dinner before dark. We tried fishing down by the lake at dusk, but mosquitos chased us out.
Tuesday - We got the MH in to the dealer and headed down to North Jetty Park. We decided to fish from shore and see if anything was biting. We did not get even a hit, and talking to locals was not encouraging either. They said the fishing here had really dropped of the last several days.

We launched the kayaks at Blackburn Point and fished for a couple hours. John caught a snook and ladyfish on a white/green clouser and Joan caught a catfish on the same. We picked up the MH and took it back to Oscar Scherer for the night. We drove to Pops Sunset Rest. for dinner. It is near North Jetty Park on the water. Nice.
Finally, we went back to the jetty to see the end of the sunset.

Salt Springs - Ocala NF (Nov 8-10)

This is our first time here. Sites are full hookup and most are paved and very nice. We drove down to the boat launch to put in the kayaks, since it was too far to wheel them there. We fished the area that was like a small lake outside the springs and Joan caught three bream and one nice bass, while John settled for one bream and lost two bass. Joan was using an olive wooly bugger and John an orange foam hooper.

Country Oaks Campground - Kingsland, Ga (Nov 6)

We drove 269 miles today and we will spend the weekend here at a nice private campground near the Florida line. It is still cool, but warmer than farther north.
Sunday - We drove back north to Jekyll and St. Simon's Islands. We checked out the campground, which is very wooded and crowded. There is a wonderful bike trail around Jekyll, but is was too cold and windy to use it. We met our friend from Trackrock, Ms. Jimmy and went out to lunch and visited at her very nice place on St. Simon's.

Petersburg COE Campground (Nov 1-6)

We arrived here after driving 4 1/2 hrs. We have a great site, but it looks like the weather is going to deteriorate on us. We fished from shore and managed only a couple small bream. Hopefully we will be able to get the kayaks out while we are here.
Wednesday - Rained off and on all day and night. It is supposed to stop today, but get much cooler and windier. We have plenty of videos and reading material, so we'll survive.
Thursday - We went on an explore to check out other areas around the lake and find places to launch in the future and fish a little. We drove thru Mistletoe State Park and a couple of boat launches. Joan caught three nice bream. We stopped at Angies Seafood/Steak Restaurant and had awesome steaks.
Friday - Weather reports have been correct, meaning the rain is over, but it is now sunny, cool, and quite breezy. We took a nice long hike around the campground this morning and are now sitting by a nice warm fire.

This is a gorgeous lake.

Moccasin Creek SP (Oct. 31)

We are on our way back to Florida. The fifth wheel is all winterized and will spend the winter at Trackrock. We got on the road about 1PM and arrived here after driving for only an hour. We have a nice site on the creek and will leave in the morning and head to the Strom Thurmond Reservoir. We took a walk, had some lunch, then fished the creek. Nothing was working until John tied on a black wooly bugger. He had three big trout follow and then one took it, but got off. The sun began to set so we had to quit.

Moccasin Creek runs thru the campground and is a good trout stream.

Brasstown Bald with Mt. High Hikers (Oct 16)

Today we drove to the top of Brasstown Bald and hike about two miles down the Wagon Trail to a scenic overlook and back. We then hiked the 3/4 mile to the top observation deck. The leaves are close to peak color now, and the air was cool making a perfect day to hike. We will miss the folks we hike with, but will see them again next spring.

Elkmont Campground - Great Smoky Mt. Nat. Park (Oct 4-8)

We had a wonderful time in this absolutely gorgeous place. It was quite cool with temps in the low 40s, but our micro-fleece blankets kept us nice and cozy. The Little River that runs through the park was a joy to fish but did not give them up easily. We did have some action with two caught and several lost. We met a local guide named Josh who was kind enough to give us a few tips.

Hike in Great Smoky Mt Nat Park (Sep 1)

We hiked 8.2 miles with the Mountain High Hikers on a portion on the Benton MacKaye trail. We started at the end of "The Road to Nowhere" with a part of the hike along Forney Creek. We tried to figure a way to fish this without the 3 mile hike to get there. We must say we were quite tired when we got back to the cars.

There is an unused tunnel which is a part of the "Road to Nowhere."

Standing Indian NRE - Franklin, NC (Aug 10-11)

We spent the last two days of our trip here at one of our favorite spots. We wade-fished the Nantahala that runs thru the campground and Joan caught a nice rainbow while John lost two. Still, it was nice to be back fishing. We had nice campfires both nights, but rain came and put it out on the last night.

Hungry Mother SP - Marion, Va (Aug 9)

We are spending the night here in s/w Va at a very nice park. The drive across the state was much smoother than the miles of construction across Pa. Our site is again on a creek, but this one has little flow and is too warm for trout. This would be a great lake to kayak if we had brought them. Next time we will have the Envoy with kayaks on top.

Saturday, Aug 7 - Today we took a long bike around the lake, took a nap, then a long hike. It was an absolutely georgeous day.

Camp Lee-Mary Jo - Little River, NY - Adarondacks (Aug 5)

We had a great day with friends we met at Ft. Clinch last winter. We explored the Adarondacks Museum and took wine, cheese, and crackers down to a lake nearby their place.

Lake George - Whippoorwill RV Park (Aug 4)

We said goodbye to the kids yesterday PM and headed out in the AM. It had rained heavy in the night, so we had to dump the awning top & sides in a bag. The drive was good down from Stowe until we hit a detour that cost us some time. Neverless, we made it and decided this would work for an overnight. We set up and put all our wet things out on the grass to dry. We had a delicious dinner cooked in the Dutch oven. It consisted of chicken, wild rice, cream of mushroom soup, chicken broth, dry Lipton Pnion soup mix. Joan mixed it up and John operated the oven.

Vt Trip (Jul 11 - Aug 14)

Sunday, Jul 11 (Moccasin Creek SP, Clayton, Ga) - Today's trip was short, since this is getaway day and we have to pack up the MH and close up the 5th wheel. We made it here in about 1 1/2 hours and were set up by mid afternoon. When we arrived, they had signs that they were full. We went to the office anyway and the volunteer confirmed that they were full. However, the lady behind the counter said that a site had opened up and we could have it. We paid up and took site #1, which is on the creek and a prime site. After we got set up, walked around and had something to eat, we took the fly rods down to the creek and fished for awhile. This creek is well stocked with trout, since the fish hatchery is right next door, but is open only to old people like us and children under age 12. We caught several fish on various flies. It seemed that they would tire of a fly after awhile, and we would have to change to something else in order to gain their interest again. Fun! It rained in the night, which made us really appreciate having the MH. Getting back on the road was much easier.

Monday, Jul 12 - Tuesday, Jul 13 (Rock Creek National Recreation Area, Erwin, Tn) - This was a longer stretch, but very doable, with several 7% climbs and descents, which the MH handled very well. We were accompanied by rain, some heavy, most of the way. This time we called ahead to make sure there were sites available. There were several, but the campground is much busier than it was when we were here two years ago. Our host friends, Vicki and Bob, were not here anymore, but we were greeted by Teresa instead. The sites here are excellent, but not as immaculate as before. The main feature here is the huge trees, mostly hemlock, oaks, and poplar. Many must be over 200 years old. We got settled in and enjoyed a walk around the campground, along the creek, and around the swimming pond, which has several large trout (for viewing only).

Wednesday, Jul 14 (Claytor Lake SP, Va) - We got an earlier start this am and arrived here about noon. We got set up, had lunch, and walked down by the lake. It sunny and cool, with a georgeous breeze.

Thursday, Jul 15 (Creekside Campground, Edinburg, Va) - Change of plans. We had planned to stop at Matthews Arm Campground on Skyline Drive near Luray, Va, but it is quite far off I-81, and for only one night it hardly seemed practical. Joan got on her I-Phone and found this campground which had good reviews on www.rvparkreviews.com, except one, so we went for it. The owner was very nice and put us on what he called his best site. It has a full deck and is in the shade right on a trout stream. John is having a problem resisting, but since we have no Virginia fishing licenses, we are grounded. It is warmer here, but with fans going, we are quite comfortable. We may turn on the ac in order to sleep tonight, but we would miss hearing the babbling creek.
See pictures:

Friday, Jul 16 - Saturday, Jul 17 (Pine Grove Furnace SP - Gettysburg, Pa) - This is a very familiar campground, and we stop here whenever we are traveling on I-81. Joan's Son came on Saturday and stayed overnight with us. It was nice visiting with him and getting caught up with his life. It rained very hard here on Friday late afternoon and we got wet coming back from our hike. We have poor phone service here, but the Verizon Air Card works a little.

Sunday, Jul 18 (Lackawanna SP - Scranton, Pa) Another quick overnight stay. We got set up, ate dinner, then walked down to the lake. It was a very beautiful evening to enjoy the lake view.

Monday, Jul 19 - Wednesday, Jul 21 (Windhall Brook COE Campground - South Londonderry, Vt) A change of plans today. We were going to stop at Gilbert Lake SP in New York, which is about half-way to Windhall for the night, but decided to press on and have three days to rest up and enjoy one of our favorite places. We are set up about 20 yards from the creek, which is quite low now. It has threatened rain, but so far only a couple of drops. We have no cell service, and can't seem to get the satellite to pick up through the trees, but the Verizon Air Card seems to work.
Tuesday, Joan cleaned the inside of the MH while John cleaned and lubed the bikes. It looked like it could rain at anytime most of the day, but we braved it and took a bike ride and two walks around the campground. Pictures soon.

Thursday, July 22 - Friday, July 23 (Camp Hayward - Ascutney, Vt) We are sitting in Hayward's yard with his Daughter, Cheryl and Son-in-law, Bruce. Cheryl was married to Joan's late brother, John. Hayward lives in our RV park in Florida. John & Bruce fished in the pond nearby and John caught about a dozen nice bluegill. Bruce was going for bass, but came up empty. On Friday morning we hiked over Mt. Wilgus to the state park with the same name and explored the park and along the Connecticut River. It is still nice and cool here, but reports predict that it is going to get hotter and more humid.

Friday, July 23 - Saturday, July 24 (Camp Nick-Kit - Heartland 4-Corners, Vt) We first drove Cheryl and Bruce's truck over to see if we would be able to get the MH into their driveway, which proved successful. It was great to see Joan's niece and nephew and thier three girls, Jaden, Kayla, and Rylee. We drove over to the local farmer's market and had dinner with them. The girls have really grown since we saw them last. On Saturday, we drove over to a local farm where they have maple syrup, cheese, and many other products to sample and buy. We got some cheese and John's favorite mustard.

Sunday, July 25 - Monday, July 26 (Camp Dave-Marty- New London, NH) We packed up once again and headed over to NH to visit Joan's cousins Dave and Marty. They have a wonderful home that includes their own trout pond. John tried fishing it, but was not able to get a bite or even a show. Marty fixed a delicious pork roast dinner and we enjoyed a trip to try to find moose and some ice cream. We were successful on the latter, but not the former. On Monday, Dave drove the four of us to Portsmouth, NH, and we explored the Strawberry Hill Museum. The name was what the colonists at first named Portsmouth, which was soon changed to fit the image of a successful port city. We had a nice dinner at a restaurant just into Maine, and then tried to find bargains at the Kittery Outlet stores. It was a great outing. We vastly enjoyed our time with them.

Tuesday, July 27 - Thursday, July 29 (Back to Camp Hayward - Ascutney, Vt) Our friends, Julie Barry, Judy, and Laurel came over in the afternoon, then we went out for pizza for dinner. John & Joan split a calzone. It was delicious. On Wednesday, Joan's niece and grandniece Gina and Mabel came over from NH to visit. We had lunch and chatted. Mable has grown a bunch. Wednesday - We spent a quiet day here today beginning with a nice walk over Mt. Wilgus to the State Park. John did some rearranging of the storage bays and we sat at the table and talked. The breeze was wonderful and the humidity dropped after the rain in the evening.

Standing Indian Hike (Jul 6)

We met our friends with Mountain High Hikers at Ingles in Hayesville and carpooled about 20 miles (half on gravel) to the start, which is on the Appalachian Trail. We did a steady, but nice, 2 1/2 mile climb to a clearing where the view was spectacular. The rododendrons were in perfect bloom due to the 5500 ft elevation. Even though the temperature was on the upper 80s in Hayesville, it was only on the low 70s on the mountain. On the hike we talked to Bill and Sharon who also like to fly fish.

Cloudland Canyon (Jun 28- Jul 2)

We left Trackrock about 9:30 am and arrived here about 12:30. We backed into site 7 and began to set up when the hosts came and told us that our friends Dick & Pat were holding a site next to them. We talked to them for awhile, then got set up.

We joined Dick & Pat around their fire in the evening and were talking when a barred owl decided to join us in a tree not more than 15 feet away. He sat on his perch and watched us for about 5 minutes before moving on.

Tuesday, Jun 29 - After bacon & eggs, we put our new backpacks on and hiked the West Rim Trail. This is a beautiful hike, with dramatic overlooks. It was very warm.

Wednesday, Jun 30 - Happy Birthday John. After cereal breakfast, we hiked from the west rim to the east rim and added a side trip to the upper falls. This is a nice, but again rugged trail, with roots and rocks to watch for. The scenery is not as spectacular as the west rim loop trail until you arrive at the east rim. We relaxed and listened to music on our I-Phones, then joined our friends at Canyon Grill for dinner. The food was great, but more expensive than usual, but it was John's birthday afterall.

Hike with MHH - Lake Winfield Scott (June 21)

We started from Lake Winfield Scott on a six mile hike on the Slaughter Creek trail. It was a fairly steep grade and quite warm. A few of us opted to turn back after about two miles. We had a nice lunch after the group returned and a few of us launched kayaks in the lake in the afternoon. We fished and caught many bream and Joan caught a nice bass. All were returned to the lake unharmed. This is a very beautiful area.

Stream Restoration (Jun 19)

We joined some Trout Unlimited chapters in putting large logs in various configurations into Bryant Creek. This effort is intended to encourage Brook Trout reproduction in the small feeder stream of Coopers Creek. We were directed by the National Forest Service. It was a long, rough ride on FS dirt roads to get here.

Toccoa River Horseshoe Bend Park (Jun 15)

We met several friends from Trout Unlimited for a couple hours wade-fishing in a great trout stream. We each caught one nice (nine inch) trout. Most from the group did about the same. We were chased off the water about noon by some thunder. We all met at All Aboard BBQ in Hayesville for lunch. The food was much better than the service.

Kayak Trip - Lake Chatuge (Jun 11)

We met six friends and launched at Jackrabbit NRA for about a four mile trip on the lake. It was warm, but cloud cover kept it bearable. Afterwards, we stopped at Chevelle's Restaurant for an excellent. Because we were a group, they brought us a huge plate of desserts.

Paddling/fishing Lake Chatuge (Jun 9)

We got up early this morning and after Joan got her haircut, we took the kayaks and launched them at Jackrabbit Rec. Area. John had the hot hand today with three very nice bream. Joan had to settle for a small rock bass and bream. We plan on having them for dinner soon. We caught all the fish on a small foam hopper that John ties. It is big enough that the smaller bream usually cannot get hooked.

Hiking Dicks Creek Gap (Jun 8)

We joined the Mountain High Hikers for a nice 3.2 mile hike on the Appalachian Trail where it crosses Hwy 76 west of Clayton, Ga. There were 28 of us on the hike which had a few fairly substantial climbs.

Senior Rodeo at the fish hatchery (June 4)

Today we helped represent TU at the Chattahoochee National Fish Hatchery. This was the annual Senior Rodeo when the throw hundreds of trout into Rock Creek for those over 55 to catch. We helped serving lunch for everyone after they fished. Folks stood nearly shoulder to shoulder to try to catch some trout. Everyone seemed to have a good time.

Fires Creek (June 3)

Today we went to Fires Creek Recreation Area in the Nantahala National Forest in NC to fish there. We started in the picnic area and hiked about a mile on the trail up the creek. John caught two trout, one small one on a parachute Adams and a larger one on a yellow grub. We returned to the picnic area and had lunch, and since the tubers left, we decided to fish around the picnic area. Joan caught two nice trout on a black ant. It was warm, so we wet waded, which worked well.

Standing Indian NRA (May 24 - 27)

We took the motorhome for this trip, which is about 39 miles from Trackrock. It is west of Franklin, NC and has an elevation of about 3500 ft. The headwaters of the Nantahala River pass thru the campground. It is a beautiful river that gets a lot of fishing pressure, but is not stocked. It has mostly wild rainbows, but also some wild browns. Armed with some tips from the locals, we fished downstream from the campground with flys that would get down into the water column. Joan, however, caught the only fish, two nice rainbows, although we both lost a few. Given the type of fishery, we still consider it a successful outing. The motorhome behaved wonderfully, and the weather mostly cooperated, with only a few storms. There was a bear that came into the campground at night and campers who left food out found it gone in the morning. One group left a few days early and misses out on their holiday weekend. We were not bothered. This was our first time in our new rig dry camping (no elec. or water hookups), so we had some things to learn about keeping the batteries charged with the generator. Joan successfully drove the motorhome back down the mountain. We had a great time.

Hike with Mountain High Hikers (May 11)

Today we hiked 6.4 miles, mostly along the Appalachian Trail, from Woody Gap, off hwy 60, to Dockery Lake. It was mostly foggy with a few periods of light rain, but a beautiful hike none the less. This was our first hike with the group, but felt very welcomed and comfortable with the pace. Their website is: http://www.mountainhighhikers.org/

Tree Removal

We had a large wild cherry break in half, with a major part of it left hanging precariously close to the fifth wheel. The only way Frank could cut it down was to move us to a site across the road for the day. He did a great job cutting it just right so it would land without hitting any good trees or utilities. We of course had to get it ready to move just like we were heading off somewhere. We will sleep much better knowing there is no longer a major limb hanging over our heads.

Special Kids Day (May 6)

Yesterday we drove over to the Chattahoochee National Fish Hatchery to help with the Special Kids Day Fishing Rodeo. Our Trout Unlimited Chapter is involved with this event every year. The hatchery lets the kids fish and keep eight trout each right in the hatchery. The kids (and helpers) had a blast, and everyone (160 kids from three counties) caught their limit.

Trackrock (Apr 26 - )

Friday, Apr 30 - Too much to do, cleaning and putting away. No time to keep up a blog.
Sunday, May 2 - We are fairly well organized and cleaned up and have really enjoyed hanging out with the Trackrock croud and getting back in swing with the Hiawassee UM folks. We enjoyed a great service this morning and were greatly challenged by pastor Jim. In the evening we drove to Vogel SP and fished from shore. We have not been successful this year with bluegill and bream like we were last year at this time in any of our usual spots. Last year we also caught several trout in the lake, but this year, nothing. Finally, John decided to go further up Wolf Creek, that runs thru the park, and caught two nice rainbows on a yellow and black foam caddis he ties.

Whitetail Ridge COE (Apr 18 - 26)

Sunday - We continue to be amazed how easy it is to pack up and be on the road. We did so leisurely and were underway by 9:39AM. We drove the 97 miles in about 2 1/2 hours. We set up on site 15, which is on the water and will give us a great view, easy access for the kayaks and shore fishing opportunities. We are going to like it here (again).
Evening - We decided to fish from shore this evening and save the kayaking for morning. Joan had the hot hand with several bass on a hopper, two being larger. We weren't sure about regs so we let them go. We also caught some bream.
Monday - Laundry day, a little fishing from shore, and a few projects kept us busy most of the day.
Evening - Same fly, same time, same place, no fish. Just not biting today.
Tuesday - Its raining today, so a good day to make a Walmart run.
Evening - It cleared up and got very nice so we went for a long walk around the campground. We spotted several deer along the way.
Wednesday - It is very foggy this morning, so we must wait for it to clear before launching the kayaks.
Later - We got the kayaks on the water and this time John sdid most of the catching with two bream and two bass caught.
He filleted them even though the bass were small.
Thursday - Today we got the kayaks out twice and caught fish both times. One bass that John caught was larger. Also John had a very large fish break off his fly. The 3x tippet he was using being no match. It was a beautiful day with temps warming up. As this is being written, we are sitting out on our veranda watching fish jumping on the lake.
Friday - Out with the kayaks again to see if the fish are biting. Joan led things off with a nice spotted bass, just as she was about to report that they didn't seem to be biting. John soon followed with one nearly a twin. We had a long dry spell, then John landed a larger one near an island in an area that has a nice dropoff. With rain coming for the next two days, we cleaned the kayaks real well and put them back up on the Envoy.
Saturday - It rained in the night with t-storms this morning. We are watching the weather closely because severe weather is possible. Joan caught a nice spotted bass on a foam hopper while we snuck down to the lake between storms.
Sunday - We were under a tornado warning most of the night but thankfully nothing developed. We enjoyed a nice worship service at 1st U.M. In Lagrange. The sun is shining and drying things out. We will get ready to depart in the am and finish the last leg of our trip back to Trackrock. We are anxious to see all our north Ga buddies.

Florence Marina SP (Apr 11 - 18)

Again, we packed up leisurely, had breakfast, and got on the road at 10:30 AM and arrived at the park at 1:30 PM after driving 133.3 miles. The trip was easy and traffic light on US 27, which is 4-lane most of the way. The campground is nice, but we would have preferred to be at Cotton Hill, because we would have been right on the water. Hopefully, it won't take them long to get it updated. We had a nice dinner, then went down to the fishing pier and fished awhile, but we only got a couple of hits, but no fish. We quit when the mosquitoes started biting. We get very poor phone service, but the air card works well, so that will be our major mode of communication.
Monday - Today was Walmart day, so after breakfast we headed towards Eufala, Al. On the way, we saw a sign that said Rood Creek Recreation Area, so we decided to check it out. This is a very nice area that has a boat launch and small campground. There are no hookups or water available, so you would have to fill before coming in and dump at the next stop. There are also no restrooms to use before launching, so we may pass on putting in here. The lady who works in the office here at Florence Marina SP had told us that there was a great buffet restaurant, called Michelle's, on the way that we should check out. They were headed there for lunch. We decided that a recommendation from a local should not be ignored so we stopped there for lunch. We were not disappointed. Later in the afternoon, some of the other campers came over to our campsite to chat. We had a nice time getting to know them. Another beautiful day here.
Tuesday - We did a little fishing, a little catching (Joan - 1 bream, John 1 bass), a little snoozing, a little hiking and a little eating (burgers on the grill where yummy).
Wednesday - Explore day. We headed over to Providence Canyon SP, which is about 12 miles from here to check it out. It turns out it was much better than we thought. The area was created by poor farming practices and erosion that ran wild. Because of the large amount of iron and other minerals that are in the local soil, the colors are remarkable. Joan could not stop taking pictures (We'll put them on as soon as we get where we have a better signal and it won't take forever to upload). We first hiked the loop around the rim, had lunch, and finally when back down into the canyons to check them out. The trip was well worth the effort.

Thursday - Today we got up fairly early and took the kayaks down to the launch and did some fishing from them. John caught two bass just under keeper size and a bream on a topwater hopper, but Joan came back empty. It was overcast all morning, which kept it from getting too hot.
Friday - Eating day today. We returned to Michelle's for their catfish buffet. It was excellent. We both ate too much, of course.
Saturday - The park filled up for the weekend with many families. We have enjoyed watching the kids having a good time. We were told by the hosts that one of the rangers would be taking a group on a boat trip down to Rood Creek Indian Mounds. We got ready and met, but they were having trouble with the boat, so the ranger drove us and led others in their cars down to the area where the mounds are. She led us on a very interesting hike around the mounds and explained what was known about them. In the evening we took a walk over to the boat launch and sat for awhile. We did a little packing in preparation for leaving in the morning and heading further north.

Eastbank COE (Apr 7 - 11)

We packed up at a leisurely pace and still made it out on the road by 10 AM. We took one rest stop, one lunch stop, and one fuel stop. We drove 201.7 miles and arrived at 3:12PM. Our gas mileage so far is 10.43, towing the Envoy. This is a beautiful campground. It is more open, but has some shade. We are on a concrete pad that is very spacious. Our view of the lake is unobstructed.
Despite the wind we fished awhile from the bank. Joan caught a nice shellcracker and a smaller bream, while John was limited to a small bream.
Thursday - We slept well and woke up to clouds. Storms are due in later so we are going to take it easy today.
Later - Looks like most of the storms are through. Nothing severe thankfully.
Friday - We woke up to cooler temp and still windy, but beautiful sunshine. After oatmeal breakfast, we walked about a mile down to the tailwater of the dam to fish. There were a line of fishermen along the wall near the dam fishing and we saw a few caught, mostly by one man. We tried various flys that we roll casted out into the current but without any hookup. We figured that about 30 fishermen accounted for 5 fish in 3 hours. Not real good odds.
Later - We had a beautiful evening sitting by the fire.
Saturday - We took our coffee walk back up the hill and to the main road. We passed a home with georgeous azalea bushes in the front yard. After bacon and egg breakfast, we fished for awhile and caught nine nice bream. It would have been enough for lunch except we did not bring a way to keep them. No cleaning this way. We fished again in the evening and caught a few more. Later we sat by a fire again and enjoyed a remarkable sunset. The best yet. Tomorrow is moving day. Next stop is Florence Marina SP on Walter F George Lake near Omaha, Ga.

Paynes Prairie SP (April 6)

We left at 10AM and arrived here at noon, after driving about 100 miles. The motorhome did great with the Envoy following obediently behind. John cranked up the Air Rides to keep the semis from having fun with us. Set at 85 pounds made it very solid, but still with a comfortable ride. We are now sitting in a parking area waiting for the folks who had our site to clear out. It gave us a chance to have a lesurely lunch. This is a beautiful campground and area. We were here three years ago and enjoyed it greatly.
After lunch, we biked about two miles over to the visitor's center and climbed to the top of the observation tower. Sometimes bison, deer, and other animals can be spotted from there. Not so today. On the path between the parking lot and the visitor's center, we passed by a large snake that we later identified as a rat snake. He gave us a start at first, but was not the least bit aggressive. We head out in the morning to East Bank COE (Corps of Engineers) Campground near Chattahoochee, Fl.

Lake Manatee SP (Mar 31 - Apr 1)

Mission accomplished. We drive out of the dealer today with our new Regency motorhome with the Envoy following behind. It was quite intimidating to take them out on the road for the first time, but all went very smoothly with no problems. We drove about 30 miles and pulled onto the park. Getting backed in and set up was surprisongly simple and quick. We had some lunch and took a walk down to the lake. This is a great campground with nice, large sites. We left the kayaks at home so we had to be content with fishing from the dock in the evening. We will try to get pictures posted of the new rig and some of the campground tomorrow.

Check http://picasaweb.google.com/johnjoanw for a few pictures.

RV World (Mar 30 - 31)

We are here now along side several other rvs outside the service bays sitting in our new Regency watching tv. It is now 8:45 pm and have been here at the dealer since 8:00 am. The Envoy will be finished in the morning and ready to tow behind and we will get our walkthrough. They seem to have done an excellent job prepping. Everything so far look perfect. We will drive up to Lake Manatee SP as soon as we are done here.

Oscar Scherer SP (Mar 29,2010)

We need to be at the RV dealer at 8:00 am and it is almost two hours from our house, so we decided to spend one last night in the pop-up before trading it in on our new motorhome. We packed the Envoy and drove down this morning and pulled in a little after noon. We got set up and drove towards North Jetty and stopped at Pop's for very good burgers. We then headed to the Jetty to see if it would be possible to fish with the terrific wind we were getting. We managed to throw a fly for awhile, but nothing was biting. We saw a couple sheepshead caught, but they would be unlikely to be interested in a fly.
We decided to check out the dealer and see where we would have to go with the pop-up. We drove around the back and spotted our new unit in line to be prepped tomorrow. It was due to be delivered to the dealer from Manatoba sometime today. It needs to be cleaned, but it looked good. The Triple E factory rep drove it down personally and will be there for our walkthrough on Wednesday. There have only been a few sold in the States and the want to make sure the unit is perfect. That works for us. The Envoy gets its tow package installed tomorrow, so we can pull it behind.

Rainbow Springs SP (Feb 21 - Mar 1)

Sunday, Feb 21 - We left Wekiwa Springs SP a day early to miss the rain that is forecast for tonight and tomorrow that makes packing up difficult. We got on the road at 1:12 pm with 73 deg and arrived at Rainbow Springs SP at 4:30pm after driving 85 miles. This was not too bad considering we had to replace a tire on the truck that went flat. The camper began to sway some so we got out and checked it and discovered the tire was about half way flat. The campground is nice, with very clean, huge sites, but there are not many trees.

Monday, Feb 22 - After breakfast, we drove into town to drop of the tire to get fixed. It should be ready to pick up tomorrow. We also stopped at Walmart for supplies. It the afternoon, since we are expecting storms and didn't want to launch the kayaks, we walked down to the springs again and fished for awhile from the dock and kayak launch. John caught a small bream and lost another. We have seen bass and are determined to catch some. As fore-casted, the storms came in late in the afternoon, but thankfully, none were severe. It did rain hard for awhile, though.

Tuesday, Feb 23 - Today was the prettiest since we started out on Feb 1. We put in here at the park and Ray and Faye put in at KP Hole and we paddled up river to the head springs. The river is georgeous with loads of wildlife. We could see many large bass but John and Ray did not catch any. John managed to land two small bream. After our paddle we treated ourselves to a fish dinner of the fish we did not catch at Gruff's Rest. on the river. It was great to sit outside and enjoy the river while we ate. We picked up the tire which had a bad valve and John put it back on back at the campsite.

Wednesday, Feb 24 - We figured we had better take advantage of the weather and get the kayaks out again bafore the next rain and cold front hit later today. Joan had three fish get off before she could get them to the boat and John caught three bream and lost a keeper sized bass. John put on a lighter weight tippet and began getting many more strikes including the bigger bass, so the ultra clear water with even ten pound fluorocarbon tippet may have been our problem in not catching many fish we'll get them next time. The rain hit about 3:30 and is already getting cooler.

Thursday, Feb 25 - Since today's high temp was only going to be about 50 deg and windy, we took the opportunity to do some exploring in the area. We drove out to Yankeetown out Hwy 40 to the end on the Gulf. There is a boat launch there and a nice picnic area with a potty (a must for kayak trips.) Next we stopped at Nature Coast Landing Campground and took a ride around. They have sites for sale as well as rent. It was excellent and might provide a place to stay in the future with our new unit (no pop-ups allowed.) Nearby is a bike trail and boat launch on the canal that runs between Lake Rousseau and the Gulf. We also explored Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve, which was very nice. Launching there would be very tide dependent. Last we stopped at a recreation area by the dam on Lake Rousseau, which was good. Despite the cold temps it was a great day.

Friday, Feb 26 - Last night was the coldest we have ever camped. It got down in the mid 20's for a few hours. We were snug in our bed, but the faucet froze. John had disconnected it before we went to bed and drained the hose and shower, so no damage to our camper. The sun came out strong this morning and thawed everything quickly. It warmed up enough to get the kayaks out again. Joan had a couple of fish on, but sadly lost them. John caught one small bass and one that was a quarter inch under keeper size of 14 inches on a chartreuse wooley bugger.

Saturday, Feb 27 - We drove over to the Villages and had lunch with a group of folks from Vermont who lived in the area where Joan grew up. Many of them knew her and her family. We have gotten together every year for the last five years. Our good friends Julie and Barry were also there and we went over to their place in the Villages afterwards. John fished in their pond without success, we watched Windsor High School girls basketball team win to go on in the state semi-finals, and went out for pizza. It was a very nice day, even though it rained for a large part of the day.

Sunday, Feb 28 - We overslept this morning, so we missed church. The sun is shinning and even though the breeze is rather cool, it is a very pleasant day. We got some of the things packed away and readied for our return to Zephyrhills tomorrow. It has been a good trip despite some lousy weather. We took a bike ride around some local trails here in the park through the woods. It was a pretty ride. Many folks have left today and others have filled in the sites right behind them. There were many kids here over the weekend despite the rain.

Monday, Mar 1 - It was foggy and still cool this morning, with dew on the ends and awning, so packing up was rather slow. We left about 10:15 and 55 deg and 1:00 pm and 68 deg when we arrived after driving 80 miles. Even though the weather was much wetter and cooler than normal, the trip was enjoyable. We met some great people and were able to kayak and visit with friends. We now need to sell the pop-up and await delivery of our new motorhome. Watch for updates.

Wekiwa Springs SP (Feb 14 - 21)

Sunday, Feb 14 - We got up about 7AM and packed up to leave. It was more difficult due to the amount of rain we had that made it necessary to do a lot of cleaning. We got on the road at 10:35 AM with a sunny sky and temp of 47 deg. We stopped at 1:32 at a favorite spot, "The Mason Jar", and had a nice baked chicken dinner. Fried chicken was the special, but we behaved ourselves. We were back on the road at 2:24 and arrived at Wekiwa SP at 3:11 Pm after driving 183 miles. It was 59 degrees when we got there. The site is very nice and we really appreciated the gravel site to replace the dirt one at Ft. Clinch. It should help us stay much cleaner. We went over to our friends Dick and Pat's site next to us and enjoyed getting up to date with them while sitting by the fire.

Monday, Feb 15 - What a beautiful day. John was actually able to return to wearing shorts. After breakfast, we took a nice hike down to the springs. We had plans of launching the kayaks after dinner, but by the time we got showered (nice showers) and ate, it got very cloudy and we got a few sprinkles. We will try again tomorrow. It is supposed to be sunny, but cooler tomorrow. After dinner, we again enjoyed a fire with Dick and Pat. We have been enjoying the Olympics and are thankful we have local channels again.

Tuesday, Feb 16 - I guess one warm day in a row is all we can expect. It was sunny today, but the wind had a bite. We did our Walmart run and went out to breakfast and came back to camp and waited for it to warm up before taking our hike. We went down to Sand Lake and John fished for awhile, but nothing to show for it. The fish must be too cold too.

Thursday, Feb 18 - It finally got warm enough, with light enough wind for is to put the kayaks in. The river here is beautiful and there is abundant wildlife. We fished, but with no catches. John had one on that got away. It is supposed to get a little warmer each day through the weekend.

Friday, Feb 19 - Our friends, Ray and Fay, came here and joined us kayaking on the river. The weather finally warmed and gave us a great outing. The river is outstanding, with abundant wildlife. Afterwards we went out for dinner at Chili's.

Ft. Clinch SP (Feb 1-14)

Monday, Feb 1 - We left at 9:07 and 55 deg and arrived here at 2:11 and 59 deg after driving 220,2 miles. We stopped at the Mason Jar rest. in Dona Vista north of Eustis for a nice brunch. We got set up and discovered that the shower was leaking. It apparently froze and cracked during our recent cold snap. John removed the faucet and we will try to get a new one tomorrow. Meanwhile we will have to use outside water and heat it for dishes in a pan. This is minor inconvenience. We commented how much easier this all will be in our new rig. We have a nice site (48) and feel settled in. Even with the abundance of trees, John was able to get a satellite signal.

Tuesday, Feb 2 - Today's main goals were to get gas, food, and a new shower faucet. All three were accomplished and we now have water and meals for the week. We walked down to the beach and fought the wind to fish for awhile, but came back without a hit. It rained most of the night, but was just cloudy all day and still on the cool side.

Wednesday, Feb 3 - We took our usual coffee walk and went down to the river to see if the fishing might be possible, but it was way too cold and windy. We decided to take a hike after pancake breakfast to stay out of the wind. We hiked around Willow Pond, then over to the beach on the Atlantic side where the other campground loop is. We are glad we chose the Amelia River Loop instead, because it would be way too windy on this side. We drove to a couple of places where we were told we could launch the yaks, but were not impressed.

Thursday, Feb 4 - A little warmer today and the sun shined awhile. We checked out Little Talbot SP and stopped for great pizza at Raffone's Brick Oven. It rained this evening.

Friday, Feb 5 - A cold front that brought heavy rain kept us close to the camper today. Thankfully there was no violent weather. At least we had several fishing shows recorded. We also got some odd jobs completed.

Saturday, Feb 6 - The campground nearly filled up today despite the weather. It was very windy today, but as long as we stayed around the campground and in the woods, it was quite pleasant. The sun was out most of the day which made us feel good. We went on a guided hike with a group of campers with a volunteer with the park. He was very knowledgeable and interesting. We both learned a lot about the local flaura and fauna. We went down to the beach and while bracing ourselves against the wind, watch a large ship come down the Mary's River and head out to the Atlantic.

Sunday, Feb 7 - We attended a wonderful contemporary service at a very warm and friendly United Methodist church nearby.

Monday, Feb 8 - We drove down to Jacksonville Beach to meet friends, Laurel and Judy, at Joe's Crab Shack. We had a great lunch and time with them there, followed by a refreshing walk on the beach.

Thursday, Feb 11 - It continues to be quite cold, but not as windy as yesterday. We take a couple of walks during the day, but have been unable to get out and fish. We have stayed very comfortable in the camper with our little space heater. At least it hasn't snowed here.

Friday, Feb 12 - It rained all day, except for a couple of hours in the late afternoon. We stayed inside, except for taking a trip out to have dinner at Barbara Jean's Restaurant near the main bridge over the Amelia River. It was wonderful. Joan had turkey with dressing and John had grilled catfish. We were stuffed when we finished. Many of the sites here have built in swimming pools. Ours is soggy, but no major pool. There is still a chance of snow tonight. Wonderful!

Saturday, Feb 13 - The sun came out about 11AM and things got dried out. We got some things cleaned up and put away and enjoyed a hike along the beach and back thru the woods. A couple we met here (Lee and Mary Jo) came over in the afternoon for snacks and we really enjoyed their company. They are from the Adarondaks.

Withlacoochee River Kayaking Trip (Jan 27)

We drove to Nobleton and met Ray, Faye, Julie, and Barry for a kayak/canoe outing. We launched about 10AM and paddled a total of 8 miles. We saw a large number of birds, including hawks, egrets, herons, woodpeckers, and anhinga. We only saw one medium sized alligator that mostly ignored us. It was a beautiful day to share with good friends with only one mishap, a turned over canoe while getting in to come back. Clothes were dampened, but not spirits.

Chassahowitzka River Kayak Fishing (Jan 14)

We went kayaking with Joan's brother Skip and his son Chad. They were using Skip's new Hobie kayaks that are peddled instead of paddled. We caught a lot of fish, but all were either too small to keep or not the eating kind. Most were ladyfish that are very bony, but fun to catch.

Fort Desoto (Jan 4 - 8, 2009)

Monday, Jan 4 - We have decided to go despite the cold, but may wimp out at any time. We should be on the road by about 10 AM. It is now 31 deg.
We made it here fine and got set up quickly. After homemade pizza on the RVQ, we drove to some areas where we thought we could stay out of the wind and fish. We were somewhat successful staying in calmer spots, but reports stating that the dropping water temps have shut down the fish bite have so far proven true. We are having veggies done in foil and steak on the RVQ for supper. It is still very windy, but we are nice and snug inside.

Tuesday, Jan 5 - We were nice & cozy warm during the night, but the wind came up a lot. It was hard to sleep with all the blowing. We are glad that we picked a protected area of the campground.
We layered up and took a coffee walk around the campground loops. There are many more campers in the big unit loops. We came back to the camper and enjoyed hot oatmeal. Yum!

Wednesday, Jan 6 - It is sunny this morning and not as windy. We took our coffee on a walk again and enjoyed seeing more bird activity on the water. There were some nice snook down by the bridge near the office that were having their way with a school of finger mullet. Bacon and eggs for breakfast.
It was warm enough to put on the waders and fish in some protected areas. John got one good hit, but otherwise we came up empty. Later, we went over to Andy and Jody's camper for some smoked mullet that they had prepared earlier. They are hosts here who we met earlier this morning. The mullet was outstanding, done with three different spice marinades.

Thursday, Jan 7 - it was actually almost warm today, but since rain is in the forecast for tomorrow, we have decided to pack up and leave this afternoon. We figured out all the times necessary and putting in the kayaks today would not work. Instead, we fished from shore near the pet area. Due to the extreem temp drop, there were hundreds of huge snook holding in this area to stay in the warmer water. Sadly, they were not interested in eating. There were so hundreds of finger mullet right near them that they were not interested in. We arrived back home about 4:30 and had everything put away by 5:30.
