Lake Manatee SP (Dec 28-Jan 10)

Wednesday - We said so long to friends and made our way over with some delay on I-75 do to an accident in the other direction. We slowed to a crawl at a few points, but never came to a stop. We got set up in our site (42) and visited with Skip & Shirl who got in a little before we did across the road. Our friends Jim and Suzanne are next door.
Thursday - Skip, Shirl, John and Joan launched kayaks here on the lake to fish. Joan lost a nice fish while John caught a nice crappy. S and S struck out. We enjoyed dinner with them.
Friday - The temp dropped considerably, so the four of us went thrift shopping. We found some nice woven baskets, including a laundry basket that will go nicely in our bedroom. Joan found a nice shirt for John.
Saturday - Following a chilly night, temps rebounded into the 70s wth clear skies. The four of us headed to Robinson Preserve with bikes on the back and inside. We had a great ride in this beautiful park. There were many people there hiking and biking, and fewer kayaking. When we got back, we cooked  hand rubbed chicken with veggies cooked in the cast iron Dutch oven.
Sunday - We said goodbye to Skip and Shirl, and to Jim and Suzanne. We stopped at Bennett Park near Walmart and fished with the "cane poles" and finesse worms. John caught a four inch bass. Beautiful park but not exactly a hot spot for fishing. John fished here in the evening, but nary a hit.
Monday - We got up early and were on the water at the ramp by the fish camp here on Lake Manatee. We started with Clousers, but we noticed two guys fly fishing from a kayak and actually catching fish. John asked them what they were throwing and one said a nymph under an indicator. They were casting right up to the shore. We paddled back to the truck and John tried to set us up as close as possible. The wind picked up making it impossible to stay on a spot so we did not have any success. It was also getting late in the morning. We will try again soon.
Tuesday - It was a rest and work around campsite day.
Wednesday - We drove down Hwy 64 thru Bradenton to check out places to launch. There were too few boats around fishing to convince us that fishing would be productive, so we drove over to Robinson Preserve for a picnic lunch and came back to camp. The traffic was more than we felt was worth driving all this way. Our options therefore are: the Braden River at Hwy 64 Bridge, the Manatee River at Ft. Hamer Park, or here on Lake Manatee.
Thursday - Our friends, Lee and Sharon, who are currently camping at Myakka River SP, met us at Linger Lodge and we kayaked a total of six miles on the Braden River. The weather was perfect and we saw many species of birds. We followed our paddle with lunch at the lodge and strawberry shortcake at O'Briens Farm.
Friday - Heavy fog this morning caused us to alter our plans to launch our kayaks on the Manatee River at Ft. Hamer Park. Instead, we fished from shore at Braden Fever Nature Park in Lakewood Ranch Road. We caught seven bass there, and although they were not very large, they were still fun.
Saturday - It rained hard under a tornado watch during the night, so we turned on the weather. Thankfully, nothing severe developed. When the rain finally stopped in the morning, the wind picked up and the temp dropped all day.
Sunday - Brrrr. 37 deg. this morning, but we bravely got up and went to the 8 AM Contemporary Service at Sun City Center UMC. It was, as usual, a wonderful service. We will be able to go here for the next two months.
Monday - We returned to the area in Lakewood Ranch we fished on Friday. Joan threw a worm and caught five decent sized bass, while John fished for bluegill with a nymph under an indicator and only caught two. He will focus on bass next time. It was a beautiful day with clear skies and temps in the 60s.
Tuesday - Our friends Lee and Sharon met us at Ft. Hamer Park in Parrish to kayak on the Manatee River. John was the only one who fished, picking out a few likely spots, while the others bird watched. He managed to catch one small, around 15" snook. Fun!  The day was gorgeous, but a little windy, especially on the return. After getting back, we had a picnic lunch at the park.

Oscar Scherer SP (Dec 14-27)

Wednesday - It took extra time to get into our site (6) today. It was very foggy in the morning so we messed around for awhile before leaving. Also, they were doing a controlled burn adjacent to the campground here at OSSP which caused considerable smoke in the campground.  We finally got set up and connected with Skip and Shirl, Joan's brother and our SIL. They treated us by providing dinner. Very nice!
Thursday - After making a Wally and thrift shop run, the four of us put our yaks in at Blackburn Point. John caught a 15" redfish, while Skip managed a large ladyfish. The red was too smal to be legal and the lady is not considered good for the table. It was very windy and Shirl took a wave over the side that soaked her pretty good.
Sunday - After saying goodbye to Skip & Shirl and Jim & Suzanne, the two of us put in at the picnic area and headed out towards the bridge. John did most of the catching, with three jack crevalle and a 19" snook. It got quite warm out on the water. We welcomed our friends Dave & Mary who are from Canada.
Monday - The four of us went to Pops on the Inter-Costal Waterway for their half priced burgers. They were the best we have had for a long time.
Tuesday - Our foursome headed back to Blackburn Point and launched. We fished hard for a couple of hours at low tide, but no bites for anyone. We consoled ourselves with pizza at Frankie's Italian.
Wednesday - We spent most of the day gabbing with neighbors and ended the day with dinner her with camp hosts Tony and Pat. We cooked chicken and rice on the cast iron Dutch oven. Yum!
Thursday - Pancake breakfast followed by sending off Dave and Mary.
Friday - We launched again here on South Creek, despite the tides not being favorable. Should have listened because neither of us got bit. We met up with friends Lee and Sharon and kayaked some of the canals.
Sunday - Merry Christmas friends. May you be richly blessed! We went to the Sarasota National Cemetery to view the wreaths, which were impressive as always. On the way back, we stopped at
Scherer-Thaxton Preserve to check it out and fish from the few areas where there is access. We used the cane poles with finesse worms and John caught one and lost another when the line came detached at the trip. This is a much better place to fish from a kayak or canoe. There is a nice place to launch there, but no potty.
Monday - Skip and Shirl drove down here and the four of us drove to Estero to have lunch with cousins Dave, Marty, and Pam at Stir Crazy. We had a great time getting caught and enjoyed great stir fry. Afterwards we went over to Bass Pro Shop where John picked up two pair of light pants to wear in the kayaks or around camp when no-see-ums are present.
Tuesday - John cleaned the front of  the motorhome and we got the kayaks cleaned and things put away for our getaway tomorrow. Our friends Lee, Sharon, Toni, and Pat joined us for lunch at Casey Key Fish House and had excellent meals and conversation. We walked right in and got the best seat in the house. After, we drove over to the jetty and enjoyed the sunset and cool breeze.

E.G. Simmons County Park (Dec 1-13)

Thursday- It was an uneventful three hour trip here using back roads (98 and 39). We got into a nice site (74) which is on the canal making it possible to launch the kayaks without taking them to the launch. We got set up and drove over to Hunter Pass to fish. We ach caught a quite large ladyfish. Not good eating, but great fight when hooked. We then went to Ybor Grill just down the road and had Cuban and steak sandwiches. Excellent!
Friday - Fished Hunter Pass here in the park from shore, but nothing biting.
Saturday - John cleaned the road dirt off the motorhome that we collected in the rain on the way down. In the evening, we drove to Apollo Beach to see if there was any action there, but nothing, so we tried again where we fished yesterday and John caught a ladyfish. They have really improved the beach at the park.
Sunday - We will miss this church (Sun City Center UMC) next year when we stay in the Inglis area. The contemporary service is excellent. Checked out Apollo Beach in the evening, but nothing there.
Monday - Gave Apollo Beach another try early, again nothing. We waded out next to the boat ramps and Joan hooked up with a couple large ladyfish and a puffer. We went over to Hunter Pass, but only got more ladyfish, puffer fish, and lizard fish.
Tuesday - It was a rainy day until late afternoon when we tried fishing again from shore at Hunter Pass. We had a good incoming tide, but again no fish.
Wednesday - We have wanted to see if Ft. Hamer Park in Parrish has reopened, so we drove over to check it out. They have added a new parking lot and pavilion and other parking barriers. This is one of our favorite places to launch the kayaks, but was closed last year. While we were in the area, we decided to go to O'briens Farm for BLTs and strawberry shortcake. Yum!
Thursday - We finally were able to put the kayaks in here and although it was still windy, we managed to find some sheltered areas. John hooked a very nice snook that took his kayak into the mangroves and got away. Fun while it lasted. We both caught small, ten inch, sea trout in this area behind mangroves near the flats. We then paddled over to the inlet to the canal and John caught two fourteen inch trout (one inch shy of keeper). At least we finally caught some fish. We were treated to a pair of bald eagles nearby. After dinner we fished from shore again, but caught nothing, despite a great incoming tide.
Friday - The temperature dropped significantly, so we had a down day. John tied Clouser flies while Joan knitted premie hats. We did manage a walk to the end of our canal.
Saturday - Cool and windy this morning, but warmer than yesterday. We walked down to Panther Point and talked to a man who runs a local chapter of Heroes On The Water. He was helping a group of vets learn to kayak. What a great ministry. They all did great and had a wonderful time. In the evening, we went back over tobHunter Pass to fish. John managed two trout that this time were only a half inch too short to keep. Getting better anyway.
Monday - One more time at Hunter's Pass from shore yields one more trout barely under the 15" minimum length limit.
Tuesday - Our foursome launched back at Blackburn Point at low tide and fished various areas, but nary a bide for any of us. We saw a large number of birds and enjoyed the overcast sky that kept the heat down.

Gulf Coast RV Resort (Oct 31-Nov 30)

Monday - It was a short 19 mile trip here, so we got in before noon. Shade is at a premium, so we are depending on our awning and canopy to protect us from the Florida sun. We are trying something new to see if we would be happy in a private park rather than struggling with making reservations two weeks at a time in the state parks.
Tuesday - Another hot one today. We got gas then checked out a dirt road along the barge canal. It is possible to fish there, but not an area with much scenic appeal. Also got the truck really dirty. We enjoyed sitting in the shade much of the day, then drove out to Yankeetown, where John fished and Joan enjoyed the view, the shade, and the breeze. It turned out to be casting practice for John. On the way back in we stopped at Shrimp Landing and enjoyed shrimp scampi. It was quite good.
Wednesday - We biked with some of our kayak buds from up north on the Dennellon Bike Path which runs along the Rainbow and Withlacoochee Rivers. We bike about 10 miles, and might have done more, but it got too hot.
Thursday - Our friends Mike and Christina came over and visited. We took a walk around the campground. They will be returning to Vietnam soon.
Friday - Our southern kayaking group put it at the Inglis dam/spillway and paddled downstream to Riverside Inn, where we had lunch. It was a nice 5.5 mile trip, in which we averaged about 4 mph. On the way we saw hundreds of gar, which were rolling on the surface.
Saturday - Our awning began to separate where it attaches at the motorhome, so John took upholstery thread and needle and sewed it thru two small holes he made in the attachment point. It came out great.
Sunday - Worship was awesome again. Pastor's message was incredible and aligned perfectly with what God has been speaking to us. In the afternoon we drove over to the Crystal River Preserve State Park and hiked and John fished from shore with little success.
Monday - We needed to drive to Zephyrhills for John's yearly eye appointment and our dermatology  checkup. John checked out good on both, while Joan required a biopsy. We are praying for a good result on that. We had a nice visit and breakfast with SIL Shirl and short visit with former neighbors, George and Dot. On the way back, we stopped at Charlie's in Crystal River for dinner outside on King's Bay.
Tuesday - Our GMC Canyon has a recall, so we made an appointment with the dealer here in Crystal Springs for today. When we got there, they told us it would take several hours of work, so we had to leave it there. They gave us a loaner for the day.
Wednesday - Here we sit in our motorhome still without our truck. The dealer says they need another full day, so we won't get it back until late tomorrow. All our fishing gear is in the truck, plus we have no way to transport the kayaks on the loaner, so fishing is out of the question. DirecTV also messed up our appointment for this morning by trying to send the technician to Trackrock instead of here in Florida. They did not get our address changed even after three calls to do so. I think we finally got it straightened out today.
Thursday - We didn't have our fishing gear, since it was still in the truck, so we went on an explore of the recreation areas close by. We went over to Felburn Park, which has a bike trail along the Canal. We walked a ways on it, then drove on a dirt road out to the end. There are a few places (piers) along the way to fish. Later, after dinner, we received a call that our truck was ready to pick up. With some trepidation we got it and thankfully, it seemed all fixed. We tried fishing from a boat launch close to our campground on the Canal, but quickly got chased away by no-see-ums. We decided to drive out to the end of Hwy 40 at Yankeetown to enjoy the sunset. John fished, but there was nothing biting.
Friday - Applebee's was honoring vets today, so we went there for lunch and had a great meal. Fishing stops at the dam and Inglis Recreation Area proved fruitless.
Saturday - Our DirecTV guy came out to upgrade us to Genie, but was unable to proceed because we don't have a permanent setup. We'll have to wait until we get back to Georgia and have a professional instillation. We rode our bikes across the canal bridge and into the Nature Coast Landing RV Park where we enjoyed checking out sites. It was really a nice day with perfect temps.
Sunday - We enjoyed another great service. This time the kids from the nursery school came and did a song. They were priceless. So cute. The message was again very challenging.
Monday - It was a perfect tide and weather conditions and our hopes were high for a successful kayak fishing trip at Yankeetown. It was not to be however, with neither of us getting a single hit. There was plenty of mullet action, but nothing that will take the Clousers and hoppers we were using.
Tuesday - Another trip to Zephyrhills for our annual dental checkup and cleaning. Joan also had a follow up appointment at the dermatologist. Thankfully all was clear.
Wednesday - We took a walk at the Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve off Hwy 40 near Yankeetown. It is a very beautiful area with a tidal creek on the trail. We then went out to the end hoping to get some good fishing information from locals. We were not disappointed. A couple who were getting their boat ready to leave were very helpful. They pointed out several areas where we should find sea trout and reds.
Thursday - It was low tide when we put the kayaks in again at Yankeetown. We followed the advice of some locals who told us where they have caught fish. At least we saw some fish, but couldn't get anything to bite. We stopped at Our Pub on the way home for pizza, but they don't make them until 4PM, so we had burgers. They were quite good, but the service was extremely slow, even though it was not crowded.
Friday - We needed a down day, so Joan knitted while John tied flies. Of course there were a couple of walks involved too.
Saturday - Our friends Bob and Kathy who we met at the Trout Unlimited Picnic in Hiawassee came over and we drove to the Yankeetown Seafood Festival. It was pretty typical of most festivals, but we did see some unusual arts and crafts. We had lunch at Cracker's and enjoyed getting to know them. They also like to fish, so we are going to try to meet up with them for some outings.
Sunday - Another wonderful service and message. Pastor Eddie does such an awesome job in his message to the little ones. They are so cute. We are going to miss it here when we leave in December.
Monday - It was quite chilly today by Florida standards, so we took a day trip to Cedar Key. We checked out a few boat launches, but decided they were too open and subject to the wind for us. We walked around town and looked in one shop. On the way back we drove over to Lower Suwanee River Preserve and walked out to the boardwalk. It is a beautiful spot. Next we drove to a boat ramp and park on the Waccasassa River and John fished a little from the bank. Nothing biting. Finally, when we got back to Inglis, we stopped at Shrimp Landing for their shrimp tacos. Yum!!
Wednesday - Since Yankeetown didn't treat us very well, we decided to try Crystal River Preserve State Park. There is a nice launch near the Visitor Center, with restrooms and good security. We tried several areas and finally, John caught a seatrout which was too small, but at least some action. Later, Joan caught one about the same size. We saw two dolphin coming up the river and also saw two bald eagles make an osprey give up its catch and drop it. At least here we saw many boats fishing in the same general areas we were. The tides were high and did not begin to flow back out until we were nearly done for the day.
Thursday - Happy Thanksgiving! We drove to Williston, Fl and had turkey and fixin's at The Ivy House Restaurant. It was really nice. The food was great as was the service. We had to bring a doggy bag back with us.
Friday - Despite our fears that it would be very crowded on the water, we checked the tide tables and planned our kayak trip back to Crystal River Preserve State Park. There was little wind, so the no-see-ums were merciless. We tried a spray that was supposed to repel them, but in only worked for a short time. John had most of the action with two ladyfish, and a small snook. Joan had to settle for a needlefish. The number of boats that headed out to the gulf was very impressive.
Sunday - We will miss Dunnellon UMC when we leave this week. After the service we returned to Inglis and had breakfast at Shrimp Landing. Excellent! In the afternoon, we got the bikes loaded on the truck and took them over to Felburn Park access to the Withlacoochee Bay Trail. We had a nice ride along the trail.

Rainbow Springs SP (Oct 23-30)

Sunday - Today we drove farther than usual at 258 miles, with considerable truck traffic the last stretch on I-75. We got into our site (14) after five hours. Thankfully, the trip was uneventful. We decided to treat ourselves at The Front Porch Restaurant. We got together with our friends Mike and Christina who now live in a nice little community on the river. We all walked down to their dock and met some of their friends. It was great getting caught up with them.
Monday - We slept in this morning, then took a couple of walks around. The park is looking rather ragged and not as well managed. There are no camp hosts right now either. In the evening, we went down to the river and John fished with the Duck Commander pole using a finesse worm. First cast produced a nice bass that John filleted. The mosquitoes were also biting.
Tuesday - We managed to sleep in again. It has been great sleeping weather. We made a Wally run and John tried for the third time without success to get our service address changed with Directv so we can get our local channels. Each time they seemed more intent to sell us something than getting us back working. John also tried to get the awning end that has partially come out of its groove to go back, but failed. Looks like we will have to put up with it for now.
Wednesday - We drove out to the end of Hwy 40 past Yamkeetown and put the kayaks in for a couple of hours. We saw plenty of mullet action, but only got a couple of hookups. Joan lost a big fish while John landed a mangrove snapper that was a half inch from being a keeper. It got quite windy around noon. We had lunch at the Riverside Lodge that used to be the Isaac Walton Lodge. They kept his name on the building anyway. We both had their shrimp special, which was excellent. Their prices were reasonable as well. The Lodge is on the Withlacoochee River with nice views while we were eating. On the way back we stopped in at Gulf Coast RV Resort where we will be staying in November to introduce ourselves. The lady there, Dawn, was vary nice and helpful.
Thursday - We had our friends Mike and Christina over for dinner and had a nice visit.
Friday - Today we kayaked with the southern contingent of our group from Silver lake to the River Ratz Cafe in Nobleton. It was I nice, but quite long (7 mile) paddle. The current helped, but was tricky in spots. No gators and John didn't fish.
Saturday - We visited a couple yard sales/flea markets, but didn't buy anything. Then we went to the Inglis Lock Recreation Area and after picking up four bags of fisherman trash fished for awhile. John had his 6 wt. with a black foam hopper which caught nothing. Joan on the other hand caught a real nice bass on a Zoom finesse worm usung a Duck Commander pole. We brought it home and added it to the two re already had. In the evening, we went over to Mike and Christina's for a burger and hotdog cookout down by the river. It was a great dinner and time with them.
Sunday - It was great to get back to First UMC of Dunnellon for a super contemporary worship service. Pastor Eddie's messages are always challenging and encouraging. We will be able to go here for all of November as well. Afterwards we had breakfast at the Citrus Grill. It was very different, but good.

Lake Seminole SP (Oct 22-23)

Friday - It was a quick 70 mile trip here with a nice tailwind. Georgia, in most of their parks does not allow specific site selection. It is wise to get in early before the better sites are taken. We got site 18, which is quite nice and mostly level. John had a challenge finding sky for the satellite. After soup for lunch, we walked over to the fishing pier, which turned out to be unfishable due to thick weeds, and the boat launch looked good, but did not produce even a bite. This a really beautiful park and is really filling up for the weekend.

Cottonhill COE (Oct 20)

Thursday - We got in about noon after a mostly uneventful drive. The only issue was when we missed a turn and had to make a u-turn at the entrance to Ft. Benning. They were very nice, though. While we were disconnecting the truck, John pushed the parking brake down too hard and broke the 12 V plug to the Brake Buddy. We drove to Abbyville, Al. and picked up a new one, and decided to have dinner at Huggin Molly's Restaurant. We both had their specialty burgers which were very good. After John got the plug fixed, he took a 6 wt. fly rod with a black foam hopper and fished the areas between heavy weeds. He caught three small bass. We are having to deal with Argentine ants here too.

Whitetail Ridge COE (October 18-19)

Tuesday - We had a nice five hour trip here and enjoyed the leaves, even though the color faded the further we got south and lower elevation. We got set up on site 34, which is real nice on a cove and relaxed after getting things organized and put away. After stuffed pepper soup for dinner, we headed down to the boat ramp and dock armed with our Duck Commander poles and Zoom finesse worms to see what we could catch. John caught a nice 13" spotted bass on his first cast. This was a good sign, especially since others fishing there said it was real slow. Sadly, this was the only ish for the evening. We will been to complete our dinner provision tomorrow.
Wednesday - We had washed the motorhome before we left, but it had a summer to collect grime inside and out, so we took advantage of the cool morning. Joan attacked the inside, while John was assigned outside. It really looks nice now and ready for us to enjoy the winter in it. In the evening we returned to the boat ram area, Joan with the same as yesterday and John with a foam hopper on a 6 wt. Joan lost a nice bass and John caught a few small bluegill and bass. Nothing to fillet.

Whitetail Ridge COE ( March 28-29)

Monday - It was a good trip here with no rain. All set up in site 34, which is on a small cove. After going to Piggly-Wiggly for needed supplies, John went down to the shoreline with a Tenkara with a greeny and managed to catch several nice bluegill. We may need to keep some of these for dinner. The weather is great with the wind beginning to pick up. After supper we went down to the boat launch to fish from shore. Joan let John do the catching tonight with a sunshine bass and a crappie which we kept and John filleted. They were caught on the Tenkara using the chartreuse weenie.
Wednesday - We went out to eat at Ruby Tuesday's and had an ok dinner. I would not recommend the one here in Lagrange, however.  We took tenkaras down to the cove by our campsite and caught a few bluegill and one really nice redear sunfish (shell cracker). We kept two, that John filleted and added to the others. It was another beautiful day, but bad weather is on the way here Thursday, so we are leaving two days early so we don't have to drive the last stretch in the rain.

Cottonhill COE (March 25-27)

The Friday - The rain finally let up enough to get finished packing up and leaving. We had rain most of the way, but stopped long enough for us to get set up in site 33. We extended our stay here by a day so hopefully we don't have to leave in the rain again. On the way here we were making a turn and the uneven road caused us to sway sharply back and forth and threw dishes on the floor breaking one. We will probably avoid some of the back roads in preference to major roads in the future.
Saturday - The rain has returned. We are watching "Passion", which is a musical rendering of Christ's last hours. Nicely done.
Sunday - Have a blessed Easter. It rained here all day.

Florida Caverns SP (March 23-24)

Wednesday - The trip here was longer, and about our max at 200 miles. Thankfully, it was uneventful and pleasant. Being a travel day, we scouted out a nearby restaurant and had a great dinner at The Oaks. Joan had beef tips and John had smoked pork chops. Yumm!
Thursday - Our friends Jim and Suzanne came over from Three Rivers SP to join us on the cavern tour. Although this is a relatively small one, it had some formations like "curtain" that we have never seen before. It was a nice tour, but required a lot of stooping and care not to bump noggins, so might not work for everyone. We took s hike with them down to the spring and John fished, demonstrating a Tenkara, but didn't see any action. In the evening, a storm came thru and we were under a tornado watch, but there was only rain with a little lightening.
Friday - It rained thru the night and morning slowing our departure. John waited for lulls to get the slides squeegeed off, dried and pulled in.

Manatee Springs SP (March 21-22)

GMonday - We had a good trip here despite fairly strong head winds. We got into a nice site (57), got set up, and drove to Betts Big T Restaurant for an excellent dinner. We then did a Walmart run, and after we returned and put things away, we walked down to the springs. There were more people there than we have ever seen, but that might be because of spring break.
Tuesday - We typically do our water exploring in our kayaks, but decided to to a river cruise by the local concession here. It was very relaxing and fun. The weather was perfect and the scenery awesome on the Suwannee River.

Lake Louisa SP (March 7-13)

The Monday - Well, it was bound to happen sometime. We were only about 20 miles from arriving when we had a blowout on the inside rear dually. Thankfully, we were right on a long right turn lane, so there was plenty of room. We called Giod Sam Emergency Road Service and were back on the road in a couple hours. We had a super nice Christian man come to change the tire. We were planning to get new tires as soon as we got back up to Blairsville, but this will hasten that. We got set up in a nice site (60), which has good shade and is a pull-thru.
Tuesday - We called Tire King and got an appointment for tomorrow, then drove over with the truck to make sure we could navigate it ok. We fished the pier on Dixie Lake in the evening and Jihn caught a bunch of little bream on the Tenkara.
Wednesday - We got the tires replaced. It only took them four hours. We shopped at Home Depot and had breakfast at Cracker Barrel. Both were within walking distance with no major highways. In the evening, we met our friends Julie and Barry, and their friends Beth and her her son Jeff for pizza at Savros, near Lake Griffin State Park. We had a great visit and awesome food.
Friday - We met John's pastor from DG, Jeff & Judy for lunch at Sarah's Greek Cuisine. We had a great visit with them and learned details of their health struggle last year and how God got them thru it.
Saturday - Today, our friends Tom and Jane, with their dogs Mocha and Cupcake. They have the same motorhome we have, but a year newer. It was great catching up with them, but sad we will only have one day with them.
Sunday - Finally, the wind took a break, so we launched the yaks on Hammond Lake. Joan took the Kiyose with a dark finesse worm, while John used a Clouser on the 6 wt. Joan caught two barely undersized bass, while John lost his only take, which he said looked like a nice crappie. The wind picked up shortly after we got off the water, but it was a beautiful paddle. The kayak launch could certainly use some work, as it is quite mucky getting in and out.

Rainbow Springs SP (Feb 22-Mar 6)

Monday - It was a three hour drive here using Rt 39 to avoid some of the construction on I-75. We got set up in site 14, which is nice and big. We ran into friends Tony and Linda and talked to them for awhile.
Tuesday - Rain threatened most of the day, but after a Wally run, we fished for awhile at the Ingles Recreation Area from shore. Joan caught a 16" LM Bass, which was going to be dinner, but John was putting it on a stringer when it made an escape move and got away. After dinner at the Front Porch, we went to the dam to fish again from shore. Joan managed to lose another bass about the same size without John's help. John caught a large bowfin, which are not good to eat.
Friday - Most of our northern kayak group are in this area in the winter. We kayaked the river here. John fished while folks were shuttling vehicles and caught three small bass on the Kiyose and a shell cracker. It was chilly, but a beautiful day on the water. After, we went to the Front Door Restaurant.
Saturday - Today was the annual Heartland, Vermont Days at Golden Corral in The Villages. We have been going as long as we have been married and Joan longer. It is always great to see everyone and get caught up, and also to meet others for the first time. Afterward we went to Barry and Julie's place to visit and let John fish in their pond. He managed one nice bass.
Sunday - We really enjoyed the contemporary service at the UMC Church of Dunnellon. The pastor has a great sense of humor and love of the Lord. After a very good lunch of blackened basa sandwiches at Swampy's, we checked out places to launch around Crystal River. We decided on the Archeological Site on the river. John fished a few spots and caught a too small trout, a small ladyfish and a small mangrove snapper. We hope to find some bigger ones tomorrow.
Monday - We launched at the Archeological Site and headed up a creek, where Joan got a redfish on that quickly ran and broke her off. John only managed a few ladyfish. It was a beautiful day and a nice paddle. There were several boats with folks fishing, but not a lot of catching. We threated ourselves to grouper sandwiches at Charlie's Fish House before heading back. The basa sandwiches at Swampy's was better.
Tuesday - We put the kayaks in at Blue Run Park across from Swampy's and went upstream a bit to fish a large inlet bay where we have seen action. Joan lost a nice fish and John caught a couple small bream, but it was slow. We used Kiyose and Tenkara rods. Anyway, it was a beautiful day on the water.
Thursday - We had trouble deciding where to go today since we have it been very successful. We started out at the Ingles Recreation area and decided to pick up three Wally bags of trash fishermen had left there. We then fished, but nothing. Next, we went over to the spillway, but nothing there either. Next we went all the way to the end at Yankeetown and ate our lunch, but did not put in because the no-see-ums drove us away. Finally, we went to the dam and launched the kayaks. After fishing about an hour with no bites, we went to a shallow bay and John landed a 12" crappie. We thought we had found a pattern, but never caught another. It got quite windy.
Friday - We kayaked the Silver River with the group. Some of us put in at Ray Wayside Park and paddled upstream to meet others who put in at the state park and paddled down. When we met after about three miles we turned around and finished paddling with the current (much easier).  We saw the monkeys that have made a home along the way. There is no fishing on the river.
Saturday - We had dinner at the China Wok with our friends Mike, Christina, Fred, and Holly. This was the best Chinese food we have had for a long time.
Sunday - Great worship this morning followed by fishing with our new friends Fred and Holly before they left to go back home. We also showed them Tenkara fishing. In the evening we had dinner with Mike and Christina and fished with them down at their dock. Mike caught a lot of bream and shell crackers on the Tenkara while John caught a nice bass on the Kiyose.

Little Manatee River SP (Feb 9-22)

Tuesday - It was windy but not too cold for our move. We got here about 11:15, and were able to go directly to our site and set up. We ran into Dave and Pat, who were on their way to Publix. We were able to do a couple loads of laundry. We went to a dinner and talent program at our church this evening, put on by the youth group, and greatly enjoyed both.
Wednesday - It was cool, but the wind didn't pick up until after the campfire coffee. We checked out River Oaks RV Park near Ruskin, but although the people there were very nice, the sites just don't have enough space. We did discover a good place across the stress to launch the kayaks at a county park. No restrooms though.
Thursday - We knew the boat ramp was closed, but we thought we could still launch the kayaks at Ft. Hamer Park. Sadly, when we got there, we find out the whole park is closed. We decided to stop for lunch at Popies Restaurant and go up to Apollo Beach and fish from shore. It was crowded there with many people fishing, and there were manatees all around. We saw a few fish caught, mostly jacks, but also a few pompano. Sadly, it was only casting practice for us.
Friday - We launched the kayaks in at Emerson Point to fish. We tried several areas with little results. John finally caught two 13 inch seatrout about 100 yards off the launch. Reports from other fishermen were similar.
Saturday - We stayed around camp today and hiked down to the nice park we found on the river. John fished with the Tenkara and caught two bream and a talapia.
Sunday - We enjoyed another great service. Skip and Shirl arrived around noon, and after they got set up we walked to the lake and down to the river.
They then came over for chicken and rice done in the Dutch oven.
Monday - The four of us drove over to Medard County Park to visit our friends Bil and Joanne and possibly put the kayaks in there. It was too windy to do that, but we had a great visit, went for strawberry shortcake and fished a little from shore and the fishing piers, but no fish. In the evening, we enjoyed spaghetti with Skip & Shirl.
Tuesday - We all decided to wheel the kayaks the approximately 1/2 mile to the lake here that nobody fished. After two hours of hard fishing? The only catches were two two bream caught by Joan and John. We have concluded that the lake is not worth the time.
Wednesday - The four of us went back to Medard County Park and this time launched the kayaks to fish. John led the catching with two large blue tilapia and a large crappie, which we brought home and and enjoyed along with Shirl's beef stew. All were delicious. This area is a bird watchers dream, with many types of herons, pelicans, terms, etc. It was an absolutely gorgeous day.
Thursday - We said goodbye to S&S this morning. In the PM we drove to O'Brien's Farm for our last BLT and strawberry shortcake for this season and to pick up veggies. They are doing another controlled burn here so we cancelled a hike down to the river. John doesn't do well around too much smoke.
Friday - We tried Apollo Beach - nothing, then EG Simmons - only saw a few undersized trout caught. It was very windy, so no kayaking.
Saturday - Big changes may be coming to our park in Zephyrhills, so we drove there to attend a meeting. Details to follow.
Sunday - Quite sad that this was the last worship service here at UM Church at Sun Cty Center. Wonderful people. A beautiful day today and we visited with several fellow campers.

Lake Manatee SP (Jan 26-Feb 8)

Tuesday - We had a beautiful day to move and we could take our time since it is only about 20-30 minutes to get here. We got in and set up (Site 34) showered, and fed, then went down to the lake to fish. The hybrid strikers don't seem to be in yet, although a guy told John they caught two.
Wednesday - It rained all night and off and on all day. We went to O'Briens Farm for our usual BLTs and strawberry shortcake.
Thursday - Rain all night and all day. So glad we have plenty of recorded programs.
Friday - It was great to see the sun again. To chilly and windy to kayak, so we stayed close. John tied eight Clousers, of which we used two down at the dock near dusk, but no success.
Saturday - There was a good crowd at the campfire coffee. We met a couple from Suchess who ride horses at Trackrock and have a mutual friend who stays there too. We launched the kayaks here and fished the nearby bay, but neither of us got a hit. There have been a few crappie caught here, but we have not found them.
Sunday - Great worship this morning.
Monday - We headed out early for EG Simmons County Park in Ruskin. We put the kayaks in at the launch and began fishing in the channel with zero bites. W then headed out on the flats and caught a few undersized trout and many ladyfish. Nothing for the fry pan, but a beautiful day on the water and some action. We also got to visit with our friends Bill and JoAnne, who are camping there. We stopped at Ybor Grill for an excellent dinner.
Tuesday - We gave EG Simmons another try and got there about the same time.  We put in between the boat launch and the swimming beach and headed south to try the flats there. We had some sea fog roll in, but other than keeping us closer to shore, it wasn't thick enough to bother us. We fished hard, but nothing. We tried several other areas with the same results. John caught one trout just before lunch, then three more just before we quit. We would have kept fishing, but all four were 13 inches, which is two inches to small to keep. Skip & Shirl fished the channel by the kayak launch and managed to catch one keeper trout. It was a beautiful day in the water and we were so tired we decided to stop at Beanies for sandwiches before heading home. John had a Reuben and Joan had a fish sandwich. They were both delicious.
Thursday - We met our friends Bill and Karen at Linger Lodge for lunch. It was great getting caught up with them while enjoying an excellent meal. This is a fun destination restaurant situated on the Braden River. It rained in the evening.
Friday - It was very windy and chilly today. In the evening, we went to Sun Cuty UMC to enjoy The Band Anastazja" who were a large family from Upstate New York and do bluegrass music. They were a treat.
Saturday - After a very nice coffee-campfire put on by the park, it rained and was cold all day.
Sunday - Great service with an awesome Super Bowl skit. Watched the game, which was better than the commercials. It was a windy, chilly day again.
Monday - Fished the dock with same results, nothing. Disappointed that the hybrid stripers never showed up this year. Still quite cool and windy.

Little Manatee River SP (Jan 12-25)

Tuesday - It was a great day to move; dry and cool. It was a short trip here so we drove separately. They wouldn't let us check in for some reason until 1PM, so we stopped in the picnic area and John got out the gas grill and did a Walmart pizza we got on the way here. The site is nice, but smaller than the one we just left.  Joan actually did four loads of laundry while John continued getting things set up.
Wednesday - We went to the Tampa RV Show at the fairgrounds with Dave and Pat. We saw some very nice rv's but decided we would keep what we have. It was a fun day, though.
Thursday - We took a really nice 2.5 mile hike today on one of the trails here. John fished in the lake and river, but only managed one small bream. We saw a coyote on the trail that was not at all happy to see us and took off way before we could get a picture.
Friday - It rained most of the night, but cleared off about noon, so we had a chance to go over to Apollo Beach to fish from shore. It was still to windy to kayak. We each hooked up with four very large fish, but sadly Joan's managed to get off.  John landed two Jack Crevalle and two 28" snook, that would have been keepers if they were in season.
Saturday - We stayed close to camp today and did some clean-up. John tied eight Clousers, four with red eyes and four with chartreuse eyes. These are to replace ones that were lost or beat up. It was a beautiful day with temp in the mid 70's.
Sunday - We were awakened at 3AM by our phones warning us of a tornado in the area. We made or way to the restrooms, which are not extremely solid, but better than an RV. When it looked like  we were in the clear, we went back and tracked the action on Fox. It looked like one tornado tracked over Lake Manatee SP, but it must not have been on the ground because there was no damage at O'Briens when we went there for lunch after church.
Monday - Cold and windy. Stayed close to camp.
Tuesday - We went over to the power plant to see the manatees, but it was way too crowded, so we went to Apollo Beach to see if anything was biting. The answer is no, but we enjoyed being there anyway. It is such a beautiful area. The tide was way down, so we could walk way around to the other side.
Wednesday - After a good coffee hour, we drove to Apollo Beach, but the results were the same as yesterday, so we went to EG Simmons County Park. Still no fish, but we were able to get caught up with our friends Bill & Joanne who are camping there. We stopped at Beanies Restaurant on the way back and had great burgers.
Thursday - Trip 5 to Apollo Beach with the same results. There were several fishing from shore and many boats, but we only saw one fish, a nice nook, being caught, or nearly caught, as it was lost near shore. It got very windy, but not uncomfortable as long as we kept our sweatshirts on.
Friday - Rain and wind kept us close to camp.
Saturday - Cold and wind kept us close to camp.
Sunday - Church AM; Football PM.
Monday - In the morning, we got so e things put up for our move tomorrow. In the afternoon, we made one last trip for this stay to Apollo Beach. John caught a small jack and we saw a few sharks caught, but the action was slow again. On the way back, we stopped at Popi's Restaurant for gyros. They were excellent. Nice place with nice people. We will return.
